Not just Fespa but all exhibitions need to think beyond postponements

Image
27 August 2020. You have probably already heard by now that Fespa Eurasia in Istanbul is postponed to 2-5 December 2021. Let us try to be an authoritative source for visitors and exhibitors.  Firstly, the main Fespa , which is in Europe and called the Global Print Expo 2021, has been postponed to 9 to 12 March 2021 in Amsterdam. Originally planned for Madrid earlier this year, it will be run together with the European Sign Expo 2021 and Sportswear Expo 2021. There is also a Fespa Mexico scheduled from 26 to 28 November 2020 in Mexico City. European trade fairs are looking at hybrid events From what we have heard from the Germany based organizers of the Frankfurt Book Fair scheduled for October 2020 and drupa 2021, which was postponed and shortened to 20 to 28 April 2021, these fairs are at a minimum concerned about the Covid-19 pandemic and recovery situations. They realize that global participation will be minimal and that they can, at best, expect European visitors. While...

We need a digital drupa 2021

Image
For months, Covid-19 has paralyzed large sections of public life. In an interview, Dr Markus Heering, managing director of the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association, explains how drupa 2021 is planned under Corona-conditions and what he expects of the shortened to nine days event from 20 to 28 April 2021. How is the crisis affecting suppliers of printing and paper technology? Suppliers of printing and paper technology are just as affected by the Corona crisis as other areas of mechanical and plant engineering. Incoming orders and sales are suffering massively. However, the commercial print sector is hit harder than the packaging sector, whose products are considered to be system relevant in many regions due to the high hygiene requirements. Overall the consequences are noticeable, customers shy away from investments, machines can neither be delivered nor put into operation, and service visits to customers are not possible in many regions. Only in Europe, we are observi...

Toppan & Dow create recyclable event banners

Image
Japanese company Toppan Printing, a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, has launched sales of 'ecocracy', a recyclable fabric for banners and signage developed by combining Toppan's processing technologies with Dow's plastics expertise. According to Toppan, ecocracy adds to the company's lineup of increasingly eco-friendly solutions for a sustainable society by enabling banners and signage recovered after events have concluded to be re-pelletized as a recycled resin, which can then be blended with timber from wood waste to produce wood-plastic composite materials for such items as benches, floors, and plant pots. Toppan's selection of Dow's polyolefin resin for the creation of the fabric and the use of polyolefin for all other plastic parts, such as membrane, mesh, eyelet, and yarn, facilitate a shift away from multiple plastic types to a monomaterial that claims to offer better recyclability th...

Google on Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code

Image
On 17 August 2020, Google posted an open letter to Australians in which the company claims “the way Aussies search every day on Google is at risk from new regulation.” The letter deals with the proposed News Media Bargaining Code. The search engine and tech giant says the proposed code would force Google to provide Australians with a worse Google Search and YouTube. The letter says that it could lead to users’ data being handed over to big news businesses and would put free services Australians use at risk. In its reply, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said Google’s letter contains misinformation. The AC&CC is the regulatory agency that released the draft News Media Bargaining Code. Google will not be required to charge Australians for its free services such as Google Search and YouTube, said the agency in its response. It is up to Google if it wants to charge readers. Also, Google will not be required to share any additional user data with Australian new...

SoulKind – new, independent magazine celebrates resilience

Image
“I want to look into your soul,” said photographer Chris Boulton as he stared down the camera lens at his subject, 70-year-old adventurer David Lemon. The photo, part of a shoot for the new independent magazine,  SoulKind , was ultimately to grace the cover, and Boulton’s instinctive phrase, in the moment, was to spark the idea for the magazine’s title.  Produced with support from Fujifilm , and printed on the Jet Press 750S,  SoulKind  is the brainchild of Chris Boulton, an experienced Cheltenham-based photographer and Jamie Rudd, a creative director, and brand consultant. “We wanted to do something purely for the love of it,” says Jamie. “Something not diluted by committee or by commercial concerns. Chris and I have only known each other for a few years, but we have a lot in common, and we’d both long-loved the idea of creating a high-quality magazine to express some of our ideas and creativity. Our challenge had been trying to find our niche – a focus to th...

The Business Inflation Expectations Survey (BIES) for June 2020

Image
The Business Inflation Expectations Survey (BIES) provides ways to examine the amount of slack in the economy by polling a panel of business leaders about their inflation expectations in the short and medium-term. This monthly survey asks questions about year-ahead cost expectations and the factors influencing price changes, such as profit and sales levels. The survey is unique because it goes straight to businesses – the price setters – rather than to consumers or households, to understand their expectations of the price level changes.  One significant advantage of BIES is that one can get a probabilistic assessment of inflation expectations and thus get a measure of uncertainty. It also provides an indirect assessment of the overall demand condition of the economy. Therefore, the results of this Survey are useful in understanding the inflation expectations of businesses and complement other macro data required for policymaking. With this objective, the BIES was introduced...

Wan-Ifra’s Chartbeat analyzes Q2 digital audience data

Image
WAN-IFRA ’s  Chartbeat  has issued an analysis of its audience engagement data and from around the world for the second quarter of 2020 in an article by Nick Lioudis. It’s best to read Lioudis’ report, which you can get by clicking here , but as an intro, I will attempt to summarize some of the South Asia highlights. Lioudis states, “A significant rise in reader engagement driven by the global pandemic was front and center in our latest analysis for the quarter ending June 30. Across the globe, we saw increases in Engaged Time and referrals, yet the challenge for publishers was (and remains) translating those increased site visits into returning, loyal readers.” If I can summarize his summary, reader engagement time varies from 36 seconds to 29 seconds. Latin America is on top at an average 36.3 seconds of audience engagement, and Central and Eastern Europe readers are at the bottom at 29 seconds. For Latin America, it’s consecutive quarters at the top. Southeast Asia i...

Image
Marking the first carbon mitigation project in Japan under Dow’s official carbon partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dow and Aeon – the largest retailer in Asia – signed a Carbon Project Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and food loss by utilizing Dow technologies in food packaging solutions and practices. The Dow-Aeon Carbon Project Agreement is one of several projects executed by Dow and the IOC around the world as part of the carbon partnership program. The international community aims to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a reliance on imported crops, Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate is at a 25-year low. In contrast, 6.43 million tons of food in Japan are wasted per year due to food products that are unsold, unconsumed, or past the expiration date. Role of packaging in reducing food loss “Plastic packaging can play a critical role i...
