Polar-Mohr develops Polar AirGo Jog for postpress finishing

Image
Polar-Mohr , the Hofheim (Germany) based machine building and technology company, has developed an innovation for postpress finishing. The Polar AirGo Jog is claimed to process entire layers fully automatically. An integrated blower unit is crucial for the systems’ success. The innovation is driven by the vision of autonomous end-to-end print finishing. The product innovation had its world premiere during the HD Innovation Week. AirGo Jog automates the loading and jogging process. First, a transomat loading unit takes an entire layer from a pallet and transports it into an automatic jogger. There the usual jogging process begins - with a decisive new component - a blower system. While jogging, two blower units blow air into the cutting layer to ensure a first-class jogging result. The jogged cutting layer is immediately ready for cutting. With a cycle time of around 60 - 90 seconds for the autonomous processing of a complete cutting layer, the innovation from Hofheim is highly efficie...

Replika Press installs Canon’s sheetfed inkjet VarioPrint

Image
As a leading Indian book printing exporter, Replika Press has become a well-known and reliable supplier to the West’s trade and textbook publishers. In the past twenty years, it has grown in the Kundli export zone just 30 minutes north of Delhi, by building three plants, of which the newest has a built-up space of over 400,000 square feet. There is a material and physical dimension to the growth. More importantly, a culture of technology absorption as the company brings in automation and new processes and diversifies to packaging and the new generation takes increasing responsibility. Most of all, the company shows opportunistic agility in quickly diversifying to monocarton packaging and luxury and rigid box cartons for the cell phone industry. But as the company’s managing director Bhuvnesh Seth conveys to us, he is aware that market trends change rapidly, and one must be ready for the next technology and market shift. Even as the company has diversified and structurally invest...

Stora Enso completes negotiations at Hylte Mill

Image
Stora Enso has completed the co-determination negotiations concerning the closure of one standard newsprint paper machine (PM3) and the deinking plant at Stora Enso ’s Hylte Mill in Sweden. The maximum personnel impact is 140 people. As a result of the co-determination negotiations, PM3 will be shut down by the end of 2020 and the DIP latest in Q2 2021. Negotiations on organizational restructuring, including the risk analysis, have started. According to our earlier article, the closure could result in total cost savings of Euro 14 million. “The decline in global newsprint demand continues due to changes in consumer behavior, and it is not expected to recover. This has lead to global overcapacity, low operating rates and poor profitability at the Hylte Mill. The planned measures would improve the competitiveness of the mill. Also, Stora Enso has invested in the site's future to produce formed fibre products and biocomposites,” says Kati ter Horst, EVP, paper division. Stora Enso wi...

Innopro BoxFlash: Compact flash pasteurizer from KHS

Image
Compact design, high energy efficiency, simple installation, and fast commissioning – these are the convincing arguments that speak for the Innopro BoxFlash from KHS . The engineering company first presented its flash pasteurizer machine, specifically developed to meet the demands of small and medium-sized breweries, four years ago. The technology, proven in practice many times since, is now available for several new application areas -- where it was initially only used in keg racking, it is now compatible with the glass, can, and PET container segments. Its compact design on a frame means that users benefit from lower logistics costs and faster installation. As with all process engineering systems from KHS , the Dortmund turnkey supplier also uses as many identical parts as possible on the Innopro BoxFlash. Components taken from other series machines include, for instance, the buffer tank and frame from the Innopro Paramix program, KHS’ pioneering three-component blending system...

As a result, Epson, which claims to have strong brand recognition and an extensive product lineup, has continued to maintain the...

‘Publishers can focus on the content and the relationships’

Image
More than a month ago, when Bengaluru only had 2,500 Covid-19 cases a day, I had the opportunity to interview Chirdeep Shetty, who is CEO of Quintype, a Bengaluru headquartered software company that powers some of the largest national and regional publishers such as BloombergQuint , Vikatan , Prabhat Khabar and many others. It is backed by Quintillion Media and IIFL Wealth – neither of whom are involved in its day to day operations. There is a long history of news publishers investing in technology companies. Often, the technology subsidiary feels that its development work can have a broader market than just its publisher investor. As Chirdeep Shetty told us, this was exactly what happened with Quintype, which developed the software for the digital platforms of Quint and Bloomberg Quint and then grew into a news industry software multi-channel solution provider. Shetty began, “We started about five years ago as a tech subsidiary of The Quint. We developed the editorial solution ...

KPMG predicts Indian media and entertainment sector revenue to drop 20% in FY2021

Image
The media and entertainment (M&E) sector in India is projected to see a significant decline of 20% in total revenues in FY2021, with deep cuts in print and films, followed by television, on account of Covid-19 disruption, according to a report published by KPMG on September 30.The M&E sector’s revenue in FY2021 is expected to be Rs 1,402 billion compared to Rs 1,751 billion in the FY2020. As a result, India posted a steep 23.9% decline in GDP in Q1FY2021 as consumer spending and investments dried up. In FY2021, the digital consumption segments, that is, digital (including OTT video) and online gaming ...

Jagran : newspaper distribution in the pandemic

Image
The Covid-19 induced lockdown has severely impacted India’s newspaper industry primarily due to the disruption in distribution and logistics challenges and the steep drop in advertising in the April to June quarter. Although circulations have improved in recent weeks, they are still significantly down from pre-lockdown levels. However, some newspapers like Jagran  utilized the pandemic to innovate on the logistics front and look for new opportunities. According to Deepak Pandey, senior vice president, Jagran said that the newspaper collaborated with other newspapers such as  Amar Ujala ,  The Hindu ,  Times of India , and  Hindustan Times  and formed a group to share knowledge during the lockdown. The news publishers shared market intelligence, made joint strategies, and shared costs, and best practices from markets. “We realized that everybody was doing their own thing, which did not lead us anywhere. So we came together to drive a common strategy ...
