Umpire Technologies’ perspective on Media Expo 2021

  The 29th edition of the Indian Printers Summit , Wan-Ifra’s annual event for the Indian print community, was held in Chennai on 17 and 18 November 2021. The “Best in Print Asia 2021” Awards were presented, and a guide to print using 40gsm newsprint,  Wan-Ifra's newest Special Report, was released at the event. After a string of online events and conferences, this year’s Wan-Ifra Indian Printers Summit saw more than 100 media executives from around 20 organizations in attendance. ABB and Zume to reduce reliance on single-use plastics

  ABB Robotics has signed an agreement to collaborate with California-based Zume , a global provider of innovative, compostable packaging. ABB will supply robotic cells that will enable Zume’s production of sustainable packaging on a global scale, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastics. ABB will integrate and install more than 1,000 molded fiber manufacturing cells (MFC) - including up to 2,000 robots at Zume customer’s sites worldwide over the next five years. ABB will leverage its program management capabilities and automation experts in its network of Global Solution Centers to enable the scale, modularity, and speed required to launch the solutions, which have the potential to produce millions of pieces of sustainable packaging annually.   There is no vaccination for the Indian newspaper reader’s love for the morning daily. We love to publish and produce dailies and also to read them. And the business is as seasonal as a roller coaster of emotion from festival to festival – from cricket madness to state and general elections. Print media advertising is expected to rise till Diwali – and to fall steeply after the first week of November – a bit like a storm subsiding. Continuing the late monsoon forecast for newspaper advertising in India from November till the end of the financial year in March 2022, indicates there will be a slight recovery in the last week of December for Christmas and New Year, followed by the usual winter coolness of advertising in January. February usually is somewhat smoggy on some days and sunny on others for print ads. Wan-Ifra India Hybrid Printers Summit in Chennai

In his welcome address to the Wan-Ifra Printers Summit this morning, Shanth Kumar of The Printers Mysore group spoke about a vibrant newspaper industry ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing lockdowns. He said, “Apart from the advertising and circulation hits that Indian newspapers have taken in the pandemic, our journalists have taken a beating from the cost-cutting of the publishers as well as from Covid-19 itself.” The 18 November morning hybrid session with about 80 or 90 participants physically present and another 30 tuning in online, was a panel discussion on CAPEX and OPEX moderated by RD Bhatnagar of the Dainik Bhaskar group . INMA selects 50 media professionals for Elevate Scholarships

  News industry diversity and inclusion is at the heart of an Elevate Scholarship class of 50 media professionals announced recently by the International News Media Association (INMA) and the Google News Initiative (GNI) . The scholarship recipients from 29 countries were selected from 137 applications and will receive training and mentoring opportunities through INMA and GNI. The 2-year-old Elevate Scholarship program aims to strengthen the news business by equipping new faces and voices with strong media industry fundamentals as well as networking and mentoring opportunities. The scholarship elevates historically under-represented and disadvantaged groups in early- to mid-career positions. Valmet and CMPC partner for Guaíba pulp mill’s modernization project in Brazil

  Valmet and CMPC have finalized the agreement, of which Valmet and CMPC signed a letter of intent in September 2021 (Valmet’s press release on September 20, 2021). According to the agreement, Valmet will deliver key technology and automation for CMPC’s BioCMPC project. The target is to modernize and increase the production capacity of the Guaíba pulp mill’s line 2 from 1.5 million air dry tonnes year(ADt/y) to 1.85 million ADt/y. The upgraded mill is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2023. The order is included in Valmet’s orders received in the fourth quarter of 2021. The value of the order is not disclosed. Valmet plans for increasing the sustainability of the pulp mill BioCMPC project’s main targets are to increase the pulp mill’s sustainability and modernize the production technology. Le Telegramme opts for the ultimate COLORMAN e:line

  The media group Le Télégramme, based in Morlaix - Brittany (France), has decided in favour of the future-oriented technology of the COLORMAN e:line with its comprehensive automation equipment "auto print" and placed an order with manroland Goss for two 64-page tabloid presses.  Le Télégramme relies on the technology and know-how of the Augsburg printing experts for its new installation. State-of-the-art PECOM operation technology with SlidePad operation and flexible MobilPad application equip the French media group for future demands. Both companies are building on a long-term service partnership. The new press lines are scheduled to be installed and commissioned by mid-2022. BillerudKorsnäs divests Beetham paper mill

  BillerudKorsnäs has today agreed with the British investment firm Inspirit regarding the divestment of the Beetham mill. The transaction is completed today. The purchase price corresponds to an equity value of around SEK 30 million. “The strategic importance of the Beetham mill for the rest of the group has been reduced since the investments in machine glazed (MG) paper production at Skärblacka a couple of years ago. With Inspirit, the Beetham mill gets an owner with the intention and resources to develop the business further,” comments Christoph Michalski, president and chief executive officer.
