Image
The 15th PrintPack India is set for its delayed biennial in-person celebration of the print and packaging industry. The celebration over the five days till 30 May heralds the deep desire of the industry to come back to its rhythm of expansion, innovation, and investment in new technology.  On our visit the day before the event, we saw the stands still rising, being dolled up, with the machines under installation getting ready to be powered up. Running machines and live demos are the heart and soul of print industry marketing. After the rational and antiseptic information exchange and trade of the pandemic years, the industry is very keen to shed all traumas and engage, network, and meet in person. The emotional component of a business is reinforced by seeing and meeting on...

Tharakan’s Grandhavari by Benyamin

Image
DC Books is creating yet another international first in publishing. The well-known publisher continues to mine the rich and adventurous seams of Indian writing, particularly in Malayalam, and is known for encouraging radical creativity in content and contexts. Moreover, it embodies a legacy of literary experimentation and willingness to take on new forms of design and production. DC Books’ most recent experiment is a disruptive reworking and designing of creative fiction called  ‘narratology’ – a novel that has no beginning or end – and yet while read in any order or chronology comes together as a whole story or novel. The idea of associative memory and cognition, the capacity of the human mind to make a whole out of only incidents or ideas that seem to be revealed in discontinuous bits was conceived and commissioned by DC Books many years ago. It paved the way for a creative and collaborative project with the publisher’s best-selling author Benyamin , a winner of several aw...

Image
Sustainability and consolidation will be the two main themes that will influence the Indian signage industry in the coming future, Vitesh Sharma, country manager, large format production business, HP India, told Indian Printer and Publisher during the Media Expo Mumbai 2022. “Sustainability will be an important theme that will impact the Indian signage printing industry. On display were HP Latex 700W with white ink and HP Latex 800 without white ink. According to Sharma, the biggest highlight of these printers is that now managing white ink has become easy. Also...

Paperex 2022 reflects demand for change in product mix

Image
One might say that the Indian paper industry is seeing renewed demand after 16 quarters of low growth and poor demand with the exception of packaging papers. The eight pandemic-ridden quarters from April 2020 to March 2022 saw little or no demand for publication papers including newsprint, while paperboard for cartons and liners for corrugated carton saw brisk requirements from consumer product companies and eCommerce. Some publication paper machines downshifted to liners, and in that burgeoning segment new projects for liner grades and corrugated cartons were initiated. The new machines for quality monocarton paperboard installed before the pandemic saw relatively good demand and gained market traction as more commercial printers added cartons to their product mix. One of the presentations at the Paperex 2022 conference on 12 May 2022 from PK Visvanathan of Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers discussed the need for Indian businesses to take stock in order to succeed in VUCA environ...

While the federal government tabled the bill in parliament on 5 April 2022, the Act when passed is expected to add to Canadian newspaper revenues by as much Canadian$ 150 million. Bill C-18 known as the Online News Act would create a framework for news outlets to collectively negotiate deals with tech companies to share online advertising revenues when the parties cannot reach a privately negotiated agreement.
