Fespa special – Digital printing in sportswear collections

Image
At Trigema, Sportswear is at the core of everything they do. The southern German company now uses digital printing when creating their sportswear collections. Since 1929, the company has had a keen focus on fair and sustainable manufacturing. Sonja Angerer reports Loyal customers of Trigema’s sportswear are fully aware of the brand's rationale. The company has been producing sportswear locally in Germany for nearly a century. Unlike other well-known global brands such as Adidas and Puma that were originally established in Germany, these brands have now relocated their production facilities overseas. Not Trigema! The company primarily imports yarns from Europe , which are then processed into knitted fabrics in Burladingen, a small town about an hour's drive from Stuttgart. Knitted fabric is very elastic meaning it works well for both underwear and sportswear. Today, the companies has approximately 1,200 workers on-site who are responsible for busy dyeing, finishing, printing, ...

Ricoh offers ValveJet heads

Image
Ricoh has highlighted its ValveJet printheads at the Fespa show in Amsterdam, with the announcement that these are now being offered to OEM customers for a variety of industrial applications. Graham Kennedy, Ricoh Europe’s director of industrial print solutions, explains the advantage of using ValveJet over piezo heads, “It’s about larger drops for fast area coverage. You have larger throw distances where you are not limited to having to decorate on a flat surface. And then high viscosity ink so you could move to automotive painting where the inks are more than 100 cp.” The principles behind the Valvejet approach are fairly simple. There is a hole at one end of the fluid chamber, which is closed by a valve and Ricoh is using a piezo actuator to open and close this valve. The fluid is supplied from a pressurized tank so that when the nozzle is opened, the air pressure is enough to force the dropout. It’s not suitable for highly detailed work – typically having around 70 – 140 dpi...

The hardships of news reporting beyond the metros

Image
Freedom of the press, newsroom diversity, sustainability of independent media, and changes in the new laws to govern online media were hotly discussed and debated at the Editors Guild of India ( EGI ) conclave in Delhi on 15 March 2024. However, amid the larger debates, a key issue that had heads nodding in affirmation was the working condition of journalists reporting beyond the metros, operating in remote locations, in India's hinterlands – many a time for a stipend that would be less than a day’s salary of top journalists in the metros and sometimes with just an ID card as an incentive. The threats they often face are the only 'perks' (pun intended). Initiating a panel discussion, Ruben Banerjee, general secretary of the Guild, recalled his days as a state correspondent in small towns and how local reporters often find themselves way down the journalistic ladder in status and facilities. There was a considerable amount of surprise when Amar Sangno, who came all the wa...
