Hindi journalism in India – then and now

Image
The launch of The Caravan's Hindi quarterly Karwaan in April 2024 was accompanied by a panel discussion that compared the state of Hindi journalism today and in the yesteryears when the medium was thriving. Moderated by Hartosh Singh Bal, executive editor of The Caravan , the panel with Paresh Nath, editor-in-chief of Delhi Press, Seema Chishti, editor of The Wire , Mrinal Pande, former chief editor of Hindustan , and Sagar, staff writer at The Caravan as speakers deliberated on what Hindi journalism needs to today to revive and revitalize. Paresh Nath, editor-in-chief of Delhi Press, said Hindi magazines still record the highest sales in India. “Our Hindi fortnightly Sarita was priced at Re 1 when it launched in 1945. This was not an easy feat during those days and involved a huge amount of risk as the magazine was being brought out by Vishva Nath, a person who was not even remotely associated with Hindi literature and came from a printing background.” Sarita has been a revol...

Six Indian and Asian megatrends at the time of drupa24

Image
We are used to receiving wisdom from the West, including the perspectives on the future of technology, industry, business and society. However, please remember that it is reliably reported and frequently quoted by Western scholars, that when MK Gandhi was once asked, “What do you think of Western civilization?” he replied, “I think it would be a good idea.” I know that it may seem presumptuous for me to offer some megatrends from the Indian and Asian point of view – but one must acknowledge the excellent writing by journalists, authors, economists, and historians in our newspapers across the sub-continent and the continent. One must also acknowledge the outspoken statements of fact, reason and eloquence of the South African lawyers in the International Court of Justice at The Hague and its ministers at public forums. Megatrends – The narrative has shifted, and changed, from the powerful mainstream media to the ordinary professional and citizen journalist, editor, videographer, an...

Mimaki shows TraPis textile prints at Fespa

Image
At this year’s Fespa event, Mimaki showed off an interesting pigment transfer concept that it first previewed at last year’s ITMA show, which it calls TraPis, standing for TRAnsfer Pigment System. The idea is to print an image onto transfer paper and then transfer it in a calendar heat press, which is essentially the same process as for dye sublimation. But the difference is that the image is not sublimated into the fibers of the material and instead sits on the surface, as with most pigment ink textile solutions. Marc Verbeem, supervisor of product management at Mimaki Europe, says that this gives it a textured finish, and so it’s mostly suitable for home decor such as pillows or towels rather than apparel. It has all the certification required to produce clothing but Verbeem says that the texture is not so comfortable to wear. Also, the ink will only survive 5-10 washing cycles, which is fine for home decor use but not nearly good enough for clothing. He explains, “The advanta...

Read Bengali Bookstore – taking Bengali literature to readers

Image
Kolkata-based Read Bengali Bookstore made its start in 2018 by selling Bengali books. Its goal is to encourage people to read more Bengali books and provide writers, local unrecognized booksellers, and small and big Bengali publishing houses an opportunity to uplift the Bengali book market by taking them to readers across India, and eventually across the globe. “I have been in the English book distribution business since 2008. In 2013, we planned to publish our own book in Bengali. After publishing, we saw there was no proper channel to sell or distribute Bengali books except a few shops on Kolkata's College Street,” said Pritam Sengupta, director, Read Bengali Bookstore, a unit of Bhasa Ventures. At that time, online bookshops were new and growing, so they set up their first Facebook page and tried selling books via the social media platform. “Since Facebook was not the proper place for marketing books at that time, we were struggling to get proper sales,” Sengupta said. Sengup...
