Image
The book printing industry is undergoing a transformative shift, driven by the rapid adoption of inkjet technology. To shed light on the topic, Pallippuram Sajith, managing director of Impel Services (Bindwel - Stelda Group) highlighted the key factors fuelling this trend and Bindwel’s strategic role in supporting the industry’s evolution. Game changer The rise of digital platforms and e-commerce has shifted consumer expectations toward faster, customized printing options, fueling the demand for short-run (50-1000 copies) and micro-run (less than 50 copies) printing. This trend has become particularly relevant in India, where the print-on-demand market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.8% between 2023 and 2031. According to Sajith, the growing demand for inkjet technology in book printing stems from its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and ability to personalize content. “Inkjet printing minimizes setup costs, making it an economical choice for ...

The minister stressed the need for fair compensation for traditional content creators to address the asymmetry in bargaining power between digital platforms and conventional media. At the same time, he called for accountability in digital media to combat fake news and safeguard democracy and the need to revisit the Safe Harbor provision amid the changing media landscape and India’s diverse cultural and social context. The Safe Harbor provision, which came into existence in the 1990s when the availability of digital media was limited to select users in universities and research institutes, provided immu...

JITF — Sitech shows self-drying ink

Image
The Taiwanese ink manufacturer Sitech has been showing off its Self Curing Aqueous Pigment, or SCAP, ink at this year’s Japan Inkjet Technology Forum (JITF) . The main promise of this ink is that it can eliminate the need for costly drying systems, which can cut the price of a press as well as its running costs. And of course, eliminating the drying should also make for more compact print devices, which is always welcome. The SCAP ink works with absorbent materials such as paper and textiles, including cotton, nylon and polyester. In terms of paper, Jason Wu, CEO of Sitech, says that it’s more likely to be used where customers want to also print coated papers, which are less absorbent and so more challenging to dry with other types of ink than uncoated papers. It will work with some absorbent plastics, such as TPE which is used for some yoga mats, but is not suitable for plastic-based media such as flexible films. The drying process is in two stages, as Wu explains: “The droplets...

Ricoh announces Mono inkjet – Pro VC40000

Image
Ricoh has announced a new monochrome press, the Pro VC40000, which is a variant of the existing VC40000 four-color inkjet press. Confusingly, Ricoh has opted to keep the same name, though I would have renamed it the Pro V40000 to distinguish between the color and Mono versions and to fit in with Ricoh’s other mono inkjet press, the V20000 (which itself is a rebadged Domino K630i). It’s possible to run the existing color version as a mono press simply by parking the color printbars. However, this latest variant is a separate model. Nonetheless, Ricoh told me that the VC naming is to reflect its color heritage, even though it’s a mono press! The Pro VC40000 models are based on a Screen Jet520NX, and all these machines use Epson PrecisionCore printheads. The color models use two printbars per color but for this variant, Ricoh has taken out the CMY bars and added a third row of printheads for the black ink. This has increased the maximum speed, up from 120 mpm to 180 mpm. There is a...

Documenting Gaza to #EndImpunity

Image
2024-11-01. Israel’s war on Gaza – and now, Lebanon -– has resulted in the highest recorded number of journalists killed in the line of duty in any given year or war. On the eve of the 10th International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Israel appears on the annual Global Impunity Index for the first time since its 2008 inception – with zero official investigations underway, and no accountability for even documented, apparently targeted killings. by Lucinda Jordaan lucinda.jordaan@wan-ifra.org | November 1, 2024 The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has been documenting the killing of journalists since 1992: overall, 1 625 names have been recorded. Within that total, there are 974 confirmed murders – yet, over the past 30 years, less than 20% have been accounted for. As we approach 2 November, the 10th United Nations designated International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Haiti and Israel are ranked as the world’s worst offenders in te...
