The Kolkata Literary Fair is on – 21 to 23 January 2022

Image
The Kolkata Literary Fair is on, and starting later today from 2:45 pm India time. Looks good, sounds good and many of the sessions actually are fun! Translation, actually it's no longer the future. As Yuval Noah Harari would say, it's not just our capacity to portray reality or what's there, but our imagination to create fiction and myths. Our capacity for languages and to evolve new meanings and to get into each other's heads is the hallmark of human consciousness. Why do we want to be there, where? Everywhere! In each others' hearts and minds. In each other cities and particularities. We want to share each others sounds and inflections and experiences that require you to imagine and dream. Translation is the experience of the human condition, it is the inevitable migration because it understands that there are no boundaries or countries except the rivers and edges of forests and creation! Competition Commission of India orders probe of Google's news practices

Image
On 7 January 2022, the Competition Commission of India directed a probe against Google concerning allegations of abuse of its dominant position raised by the Digital News Publishers Association, an organization comprising the digital platforms of some of the leading Indian newspapers and media groups. It includes platforms and news media organizations such as Eenadu , Malayalam Manorama , Bennett Coleman, Indian Express , NDTV, India Today , and the ABP group. The DNPA has submitted information under Section 19(1)(a) of the 2002 Competition Act against Alphabet Inc., Google LLC, Google India Private Limited, and Google Ireland Limited. The CCI noted that Google had prima facie abused its dominant position in providing its news aggregation services, and ordered a probe in the matter. Our readers may be aware that Google has already been compelled by the competition commissions of the governments of Australia, France and recently Germany to come up with a fairer way of sharing re...

Pandemic jinx continues – hits Indian children the hardest

Image
5 January 2022, New Delhi – Before 2022 could get started the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus derailed the rising optimism of November and December. It is an accepted belief among scientists and epidemiologists that new mutations and variants will continue to arrive and spread in the foreseeable future. The temptation is to go on with our business and to ignore what is being described as a mild variant in a vaccination available and ‘more ready’ environment.  However, India too is undergoing an Omicron wave, one we don’t seem to be acknowledging. While official figures suggest that the Omicron cases are less than 2% of India’s total Covid-19 cases, this is likely a massive underestimate. While the official number of Omicron cases in India is estimated to be nearly 1,500, several days ago, in reality, it could be more than ten times that – as high as 18,000. The numbers in this third Covid-19 wave are rising exponentially as reported by an NDTV report based on research by...

Image
The 45th edition of the Chennai Book Fair, slated to be held from 6 to 23 January 2022 in the city's YMCA Grounds in Nandanam, has been postponed amid the rising Covid-19 cases in the city. Organized by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) , this year’s 18-day edition was to be inaugurated by the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin with Anbil Mahesh Poyamozhi, the pastor of education, in attendance. The cancellation has discouraged publishers and booksellers who were planning to recover their losses of the past two pandemic-ridden years. The Tamil Nadu government introduced fresh Covid-19 curbs on 1 January 2022 as the daily fresh infection case count crossed the 1,000 mark on 31 December 2021 in the state,  postponing all exhibitions and fairs with immediate effect. The Chennai Book Fair had been extended from 12 days to 18 days with a safety limit on the number of individuals allowed to attend the event each day. The event had been planned...

Can paper really replace plastic in packaging?

Image
Global paper and packaging companies are looking to take away market share from plastic packaging with investments in either virgin fiber paperboard or recycled paperboard to replace the use of plastic packaging. When you are serious, investments of this type need to be serious although you are appealing to the ESG mandates of brands who need to clean up their packaging act. As we wrote a few days ago, the Sweden-based BillerudKorsnas announced on 20 December 2021 that it is acquiring North America-based Verso for US$ 825 million to ‘ignite’ its growth in that continent. The acquisition is to create “one of the largest providers of virgin fiber paper packaging board with a cost and quality advantage.” Similarly, Atlanta US-based Graphic Packaging Holding is investing US$ 600 million in a recycled board project in Kalamazoo, Michigan to produce more environmentally friendly paperboard that brand owners can use to pack their products in the hope of pleasing their investors and consumer...

Digital label presses gain traction in the pandemic

Image
As we wrote more than a year ago, the pandemic has accelerated the shift to digital label presses. Digital label presses require less manpower and touch and are capable of multiple job changes and smaller volumes. In the pandemic, they have helped converters deliver with short turnaround times and to provide variable barcoded labels without the use of an additional offline inkjet operation. As one converter said to us during the last 22 months of the pandemic, “If this period of economic uncertainty and constraints has not taught us the value of digital presses, it is unlikely that anything will.” [caption id="attachment_66443" align="alignright" width="318"] Labels for boutique brand Buds & Berries shampoos produced on its HP25000 digital press by ArtNext Photo ArtNext[/caption] Hence the population or footprint of digital label presses in the country that numbered about 35 to 40 presses acquired over several years before the pandemic, has been co...
